Chapter Eleven

Sarah opened her mouth to speak, determined to become more assertive and courageous like Jane had been, but she bit back the words. If she wasn’t careful, she would lose the only real home she had since her parents’ death. The thought inside her head mocked her attempts at self-improvement. She struggled to keep a brave face and lifted her chin a little higher.

Wisdom dictated that Sarah delay speaking. She knew to defend her view on the matter while Ricardo was angry would do no good.

Hope soared within her when the rage on his face toned down from a squall at sea to a gentle sprinkle.

Ricardo crossed his arms in front of his chest. “All right, ladies. What has Farnsworth done that warrants running away? You know how serious it is to break your contracts. When you’re caught, it will not be pleasant.” He scowled at the two fugitives as they huddled together, fear emanating like heat from a fireplace.

“Now wait just a minute, Ricardo.” For a split-second Sarah realized she may not have the privilege of calling him by his first name much longer, but emotion carried her forward. “Farnsworth made unwanted advances toward Bridget and Margery. I couldn’t sit around and allow such brutish behavior. Besides, they plan to return when Mrs. Notley comes back from her trip.”

“How do you know Mrs. Notley will overlook this incident?” Ricardo placed his hands on his hips and glared.

Sarah’s lower lip quivered. Bravado drained from her with the thought of what consequences could result. Would he kick her out of her room right then? “What’s going to happen to us?”

Ricardo lifted his hands in capitulation. Sympathy replaced anger. “Us? You mean them? Come now, Sarah. Let’s discuss this rationally.”

“Are you going to send me away?” Fresh tears flowed that Sarah felt powerless to hold back. What had she been thinking? “What’s going to become of Bridget and Margery?”

Ricardo rubbed a hand over his jaw. “You have your freedom, Sarah. No one can take that from you.” He began to pace. “Regarding Bridget and Margery, let me think.”

“Are you going to tell your parents? This would put them in a terrible position.” Sarah followed Ricardo’s movements, hopeful. He hadn’t thrown them out of the house yet, or worse, taken them straight to Farnsworth.

Ricardo slapped his forehead. “How do I let you talk me into these things?” He shook his head so vehemently a lock of thick black hair fell across his left eye. “They can stay, but when it’s time for them to return to the Notley plantation, I will have to be involved.” He turned to Bridget and Margery. “We must keep it a secret that Sarah helped you. We’ll come up with some way to keep Sarah’s involvement out of this. Farnsworth has made threats against her.”

The trio said in unison, “Thank you.” A flow of repeated phrases of appreciation continued to pour from the girls to Ricardo.

At that moment, Margery’s stomach growled. Sarah doubled over laughing, relief at Ricardo’s agreement lightening her mood.
